The Forgotten Photos of Evie Frye

That would probably be the most fitting title for this blog post – but more on that later. Let’s start at the beginning…

For my first real blog post, there was never any question which cosplay and photoshoot it had to be about. I don’t think there’s another shoot in all these years that has so many stories to tell (and so much to show). Not least because it’s also about a very special person to me. That person is the lovely Sarah, aka Vintera Cosplay, who created this incredible costume in a mind-blowing 242 hours of work. When someone steps in front of your camera with that level of craftsmanship – and you also happen to be a massive Assassin’s Creed fan – that’s already pretty awesome. But when a friendship grows out of such a shoot and lasts for years, that’s something truly special. Definitely worth writing a blog post about… 😉

It’s worth mentioning that there were actually two photoshoots with this cosplay. The first one (where we met) took place back in 2018, when I was still very much a beginner – and honestly couldn’t believe that someone with such an amazing cosplay wanted me to take their photos.

Years later, when we planned to meet again, I asked her to bring the cosplay along once more. You have to realize how much space it takes to transport something like that – and bringing two or three of those costumes all the way from Berlin to Dormagen is no small task.

Still, I really wanted to recreate that shoot after all those years. By then I had learned a lot, and the idea of doing studio shots sounded great too — especially since we could now render fitting 3D backgrounds, or even generate them with AI (something none of us had really thought of back then).

Then the big day came — our next shoot together — and, as always, the priorities were crystal clear!
Cosplay 1 at location A, Cosplay 1 at location B…
At least, that’s what you might think if you imagine a typical cosplay shoot. But if you know Sarah and me, you know better. Our priorities are more like: “When and where are we going to eat?”, “Which ice cream place are we trying this time?” — and only much later comes the question of actually taking photos, if we have the time and energy. Luckily, both were true that day, and we shot quite a bit — including, of course, Evie Frye.

A little peek at the incredible detail of this cosplay (source: Instagram/@vintera_cosplay):

Naturally, we started the day with one of her newer cosplays and saved Evie for last. After we finished the studio shots, we thought it’d be a great idea to quickly head over to the same location where our first shoot had taken place — it was only a few minutes from my home studio. That way, we could directly compare how much my photography had evolved over the years. But when you take even a short break after such a long day, dusk sets in, and a light drizzle starts… it’s amazing how quickly your motivation can drop.

We checked the first few test shots — they were quite noisy due to the low light. Knowing that images often look darker on the camera screen than they really are, and following the motto “better to have them than not”, we took a few more shots anyway. After about ten minutes, we looked at each other and both thought, “Yeah, that’s enough, right?”
It was probably one of the shortest shoots I’ve ever done — but considering the whole day, we already had everything we wanted “in the bag,” and mentally checked this set off the list.

Over two years later, while cleaning up my hard drive, I stumbled across those photos — completely forgotten. I thought, “Huh, why not take another look?” After all, Photoshop has gotten better — maybe I could make something out of them.

And what can I say… I could. And honestly, the shots weren’t nearly as bad as I remembered. Pretty embarrassing to forget such cool photos entirely — but hey, better late than never! In the end, some really nice results came out of it, and I think Sarah was just as surprised as I was when, after two and a half years, she suddenly got a Dropbox link to the finished images.

So, the lesson learned: next time, just keep shooting — no matter how bad the conditions seem.
The throwaways of today might just become the killer set of tomorrow!
